Printing Made Easy: Connecting Your Smartphone to Your Wireless Printer

Published on September 3, 2025 by SNSPro Global

It’s incredibly frustrating when you need to print something from your phone but can’t figure out how to connect to the printer. Whether it’s a boarding pass, an important document, or a treasured photo, printing directly from your smartphone is a huge convenience. The good news is that with most modern printers, it’s a straightforward process.

This guide is designed to make perfect sense, even if you don’t consider yourself a tech whiz. Let’s get you printing!

What You’ll Need

  • A Wi-Fi-enabled printer (like HP, Canon, Epson, or Brother)
  • A smartphone (Android or iPhone)
  • Access to the same Wi-Fi network for both the phone and the printer

Bonus tip: If your printer supports Wi-Fi Direct, you can even connect without a router.

Step 1: Get the Printer on Wi-Fi

This part is different for every printer brand, but the general steps go like this:

  • 1. Turn on the printer.
  • 2. Go to the printer’s Settings or Network Setup from its control panel.
  • 3. Select Wireless Setup Wizard or something similar.
  • 4. Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter the password.

Once your printer is connected to Wi-Fi, you’re halfway there.

If You’re Using an Android Phone
  • 1. Download the official printer app:
    • HP → HP Smart
    • Canon → Canon PRINT
    • Epson → Epson iPrint
    • Brother → Brother iPrint&Scan
  • 2. Open the app and follow the steps to Add a New Printer.
  • 3. Once it’s connected, you can print directly from the app, or:
    • Open a photo, PDF, or webpage
    • Tap Share or Print
    • Select your printer and hit Print
If You’re Using an iPhone (iOS)

Most newer printers support AirPrint, which is built into iOS.

  1. Make sure your printer and iPhone are on the same Wi-Fi.
  2. Open the photo, document, or email you want to print.
  3. Tap the Share icon (square with arrow).
  4. Tap Print.
  5. Select your printer and tap Print again.

Done. No extra app needed—unless you want advanced features like scanning or checking ink levels, in which case you can still download the official app for your printer.

What If Your Printer Has Wi-Fi Direct?

If your printer has a Wi-Fi Direct button:

  1. Press the Wi-Fi Direct button on your printer.
  2. On your phone, go to Wi-Fi Settings.
  3. Connect to the printer’s network (usually something like “HP-Print-ABC123”).
  4. Print using the printer app.

This is great for when you’re not near your usual Wi-Fi network.

Common Fixes if It Doesn’t Work

  • Restart everything: Your phone, your printer, and your Wi-Fi router.
  • Check compatibility: Make sure the app and printer model match.
  • Update your printer’s firmware via the manufacturer’s app.
  • Re-add the printer in your app if it disappears.

Connecting your wireless printer to your smartphone once means you can print photos, tickets, forms, recipes—whatever you want—without transferring files to a computer.

Yes, it might take 10 minutes to set up the first time, but after that? It’s tap-and-go convenience you’ll be glad you set up.

So go ahead—print that boarding pass from bed. Your future self will thank you.
